What does a new dryer vent run actually involve?

Most of the decision is routing, not parts. The shortest legal path wins. On slab-on-grade block ranches, that usually means a short exterior-wall run through the block. Garage installs are easier: the dryer sits in the corner, and the duct exits the side wall or above the door. Second-floor laundry rooms in newer subdivisions are the hard ones. Those climb into the attic and terminate at a roof cap. Coastal homes on pilings drop through the floor framing instead.

Rigid metal duct, joints taped, no screws poking into the airstream. Screws catch lint and start the plug. Flexible foil belongs nowhere except a short transition behind the appliance, and even there it gets crushed flat by pedestal-height washer and dryer pairs. Joints inside a wall cavity have to be secured before the drywall closes, or they separate and dump lint and moisture into insulation.

Termination matters as much as the run. A screen over a dryer outlet is not allowed and will clog. A damper hood keeps birds and wasps out during spring nesting without a screen.

Long attic runs sweat during the December–February cold snaps. Insulating that section is worth doing while the duct is open.
